Surge in calls to family helpline

A SUPPORT organisation for one-parent families has blamed the recession for a large increase in calls to its helpline from separating couples last year.

One Family claimed a 24% rise in people seeking assistance during 2009 was a direct result of the economic downturn.

Karen Kiernan, director of One Family, said a large part of the increase was calls from couples separating due to financial stress.
