Journalist Con Houlihan honoured for his inspirational life work
Picking up the accolade on Con’s behalf, his friend Pat O’Mahony described him as an “intellectual powerhouse” and “a liberal by disposition”.
Chosen by a panel of judges from organisations working with the elderly, Con was given the award in recognition of his inspirational life work that spans a 62-year career in journalism.
Houlihan has written for the Sunday World, the Evening Herald, The Irish Runner and The Irish Times and is a native of Castleisland in Co Kerry where a statue was erected in his honour on Main Street in 2004.
Commenting on Houlihan’s contribution to Irish journalism, Mr O’Mahony said: “Con is an intellectual powerhouse with exceptional knowledge of maths, philosophy and English and is probably Ireland’s leading expert on syntax. A liberal by disposition, he has opposed racial and class discrimination, political violence and is a huge supporter of the Travelling community.
“I am truly delighted that Con’s portrayal of Irish society has been recognised by winning this award and I encourage him to never stop writing.”
Awards were also presented to Pat Kelleher, who established the North Longford Men’s Group in 2005 for the over-60s and the National Advocacy Programme Alliance for their work with older people in residential care.
The awards, presented at a ceremony in Dublin, were sponsored by BT, The Irish Times and Vodafone.

“All of these people exemplify a great kindness that is a credit to our country and I’m delighted to be able to celebrate in their success.” said Senator Mary White.
Each winner was presented with a trophy from Waterford Crystal and an awards scroll.
