10k walk aims to raise €75,000 for breast cancer

THE lakeside sister towns of Ballina/Killaloe, which straddle Lough Derg, will next Saturday host more than 500 people for the inaugural 10k Pink Ribbon Walk by the Lough to raise breast cancer awareness.

It is also hoped it will raise in excess of €75,000 for Action Breast Cancer.

Committee chairperson Sara McGowan, from Ballina, said: “The proceeds from this walk goes entirely to the Action Breast cancer charity, which is Ireland’s leading provider of breast cancer information and support and every year reaches over 25,000 women who are concerned about breast cancer and breast health.”

The Walk by the Lough is only the second walk under the global Pink Ribbon banner in Ireland, following on from the inaugural event in Kells, Co Meath, which was organised by Sara’s mother Penny. Some 500 people took part in that event and the Ballina-Killaloe version looks set to surpass that on Saturday. Participants will raise a minimum of €100 and a range of innovative fund-raising events have already been held across the mid-west to swell the coffers. Late enquiries can still be made by contacting the committee on 085 2020434. Registration forms are also available from Cerise Shoes, Convent Hill, Killaloe, Co Clare.

Race numbers and T-shirts for Saturday’s walk will be available for collection between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on Friday in the ballroom of the Lakeside Hotel, and also on the Saturday morning from 12.00 to 1.30pm.

The organising committee would also appreciate if sponsorship monies are submitted at this time.

While the walk itself commences at 2.30pm, festivities will be kicked-of at 2pm by former rugby star Keith Wood. Words of support will also be given by event patron Barbara Mc Mahon while fitness coach Carmel De Mello will deliver an energising warm-up routine at 2.15pm.
