THE Government has given the green light to create plans for the first purpose-built town in Munster.

More than 1,000 acres has been designated for the proposed town near Blarney, Co Cork, which, on completion, could have a population of around 13,000.

The designation of Monard as a strategic development zone (SDZ) will enable Cork Co Council develop a blueprint for housing and support infrastructure there over the next three to four years.
