Bear essentials converge for picnic

IF YOU go down to Fota House later this month – on Sunday, June 20 to be exact – you’re in for a big surprise.

For that’s the day when teddy bears will have a special picnic to raise money for children’s charity Barnardos.

And internet sensation, Crystal Swing, have just confirmed a special guest appearance on the day – which also happens to be Father’s Day.

The event, which will cost €10 per family, is being held as part of a nationwide campaign in association with Select Hotels of Ireland to support Barnardos.

The Fota event will take place from 2pm to 5pm in the beautiful surroundings of Fota House’s renowned arboretum and gardens.

Every child will receive a goodie bag, and families, who are free to explore the gardens, will be able to enjoy a barbecue, bouncy castles, face painting, magic shows and fun sports events like the egg and spoon and sack races.

Una Young, the general manager of Select Hotels of Ireland, said: “We’re really looking forward to this year’s Teddy Bears Picnic and delighted to have Crystal Swing coming along to support this worthy cause.”

Barnardos chief executive Fergus Finlay said the Teddy Bears Picnic is a novel way for families to spend a fun day together and help other families.

“We hope that families come along for what promises to be a great day and that some decide to adopt a bear and give it a loving home,” he said.

“Every bear adopted on the day will contribute to Barnardos.”

Barnardos has more than 40 centres offering supports to families in poverty.

It also provides advice on issues such as parenting skills, domestic abuse, and addiction, and how these problems impact on children.
