Kevin O’Mahoney, aged 19, from Kilteely, died at the scene of the single car accident which happened in the village of Hospital at about 5.20am.

He was a passenger in a car driven by Dale Frawley, aged 20, from Knocklong.

Mr Frawley was transferred in a serious condition yesterday from the Mid-Western Regional Hospital to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The car was travelling in the direction of Limerick when it collided with a lamp post.

The two were past pupils of John the Baptist Community School in Hospital.

School principal Jim Twohig said: “It’s shocking devastation. They had only been gone two years. We are absolutely devastated. We have been through it all before – it is so sad.”

In January 2009 two other past pupils of the school – John Swords, aged 22, and Oliver Kearney, aged 21 – were killed in an early morning road collision in Knocklong.

Mr Twohig said Kevin O’Mahoney and Dale Frawley were well liked by other students when they attended John the Baptist.

He said: “They would have played sports. It’s very sad because Kevin only lost his father two years ago.”
