Student left fighting for life after campus fountain fall
The student, 22, who is from Co Clare, received serious neck and head injuries when he fell into a fountain near the Kemmy Business School building at about 4.50am.
The business studies student was with four others at the time.
They had been out celebrating the completion of the fourth-year exams when they decided to jump into the fountain water which is just a few feet deep.
Security staff rushed to the scene and helped get the student out of the fountain and he was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
A spokesman for the Mid-Western Regional Hospital said: “A student from UL is in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.”
A spokesperson for UL said they were satisfied there was nothing sinister involved in the incident.
The spokesperson said there may have been some play acting and it was not yet known how the student fell in the fountain.
The president of the UL Students’ Union, Duan Dillon McLoughlin, with other students, visited the hospital yesterday.
He said: “It seems to have been a freak accident and is very upsetting for all the students at UL. We are not sure of the details of what happened, but now all we want is to hope he pulls through and those with him get the necessary support.”
