Government accused of doctoring letter to Anglo shareholders

THE Government “doctored” a letter to shareholders from the Anglo Irish Bank chairman to make the institution’s financial position look more positive, Labour last night claimed.

Party leader Eamon Gilmore raised concerns a statement issued with the bank’s annual report in February of last year had been rewritten by the Department of Finance for political purposes.

Mr Gilmore said the chairman had been encouraged by the Government to “effectively doctor” information being released to the public.
