Labour eyes presidency as Higgins tipped

NEXT year’s presidential election will definitely see a Labour candidate join the battle, party leader Eamon Gilmore has said.

Mr Gilmore said the party would decide on a standard-bearer at the end of this year after Labour ducked out of the last presidential race in 2004.

Galway TD Michael D Higgins is believed to be a front-runner for the party’s presidential bid.
