CONSUMERS will face higher prices for their everyday shopping basket if the Government presses ahead with its plans for a code of practice for the grocery sector.

The ESRI has questioned the benefit of the Government’s proposals to introduce such a code as a measure to ensure balance between suppliers and supermarkets.

In a research paper , the country’s top economic think tank has expressed concern the main effect of the introduction of a code of practice would be higher prices for consumers.
