THE Department of Finance has reiterated that the banking inquiry will examine only the causes of the crisis in the sector, and not the Government’s response to it.

The Government has come under sustained criticism in recent days over its decision to provide a blanket guarantee for the country’s six main financial institutions in September 2008.

The inclusion of Anglo Irish Bank in the scheme, in particular, has drawn opposition fire.
