Who grits our roads?

CRITICISM of the level of gritting of the country’s road network has raised questions over who exactly has responsibility for ensuring roads are gritted to prevent vehicles from skidding.

The National Roads Authority provides funding to local authorities for the maintenance of national primary and secondary routes within their jurisdiction.

However, the maintenance of 215km of the country’s 580km motorway network is the responsibility of private toll operators.
