AN investigation into whether gardaí were within their rights to shoot a man dead during a foiled bank robbery will not be completed until March at the earliest.

The Irish Examiner understands that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission’s inquiries into the May 15 incident at the Bank of Ireland branch in Lucan, Dublin, have yet to confirm whether the use of lethal force was warranted.

Gareth Molloy, 27, from Lower Sheriff Street, lost his life in a gunfight with officers during the incident when he pointed a sawn-off shotgun at gardaí after they were alerted to an attempted robbery of a cash-in-transit van.
