The discovery was made just after 4pm yesterday by officers who had been alerted to a deserted car near the Ballindinas roundabout in Co Wexford.

Gardaí had been contacted in the hours beforehand by a number of passersby who raised concerns over the vehicle.

When officers investigated the incident, they found that the car had been burned with a man’s body inside.

In a statement confirming the news, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that the scene has been preserved for a technical examination and that the state pathologist has been requested to carry out a postmortem on the body.

Six people, including two women, have been arrested in relation to the find and are currently being detained at Wexford Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

They can be held for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a blue Opel Corsa bearing the partial registration 98 D near the Glenville Road and Ballindinas roundabout in Wexford town since Thursday evening.

Witnesses or anyone with information have been asked to contact officers in Wexford at 053 9165200 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666111.
