SOME vacant council houses in need of maintenance will be boarded up in north Cork because Cork County Council has run out of money to carry out the work.

The cash-strapped council is also unable to open a €3 million recycling facility in the region, because it hasn’t the necessary money left to man it.

Assistant county manager Tim Lucey told councillors at a meeting of the Northern Division in Mallow yesterday that 83% of the council’s housing maintenance fund had already been spent. Mr Lucey said the remainder was already allocated for further work up to the end of the year.
