Gardaí in talks for golf club
The Garda Sports and Social Club has initiated talks with the Limerick County Golf Club at Ballyneety on a possible purchase of the facility.
The Garda club made what is believed a very considerable profit when it sold its club premises in Sexton Street last year to the Department of Education.
As a result the club is in a very strong financial position in finding a replacement facility and Ballyneety is one of the options being considered.
Garda John Leamy who is a member of the social club’s committee said: “We are exploring the option of buying Ballyneety and looking at the whole concept. We have been talking with the people in Ballyneety. It is one of a number options we are looking at.
“It won’t be a decision for our committee and an EGM will have to be called. We are obviously looking for the best value we can get.”
The sports and social club, with 350 members, was set up by gardaí from the Limerick division 15 years ago and they purchased part of an old school premises in Sexton Street.
It was developed into a club facility with a wide range of amenities which included bars, function rooms and games rooms.
Garda Leamy said: “Talks have taken place with Ballyneety and it’s no secret that the club is for sale.”
