Gardaí attacked by couple after intervening in late-night row

A GARDA was nearly strangled and his female colleague punched in the face and head after they went to separate a couple who were involved in a verbal argument in Cork city centre.

The male garda, in his late 20s, was taken to hospital with neck injuries after the early morning incident, last Saturday, in Washington Street.

It is understood, when gardaí offered assistance, the pair became extremely violent and turned on the officers.
