Parents of woman shot in Lanzarote at hospital bedside

THE parents of the Limerick woman shot and badly wounded at her home in Lanzarote were at her hospital bedside last night after flying out to the Canary Islands.

Michelle Massey, 25, who comes from Craeval Park, Moyross, was reportedly shot by her Spanish partner, Eulogio, 45, who then turned the gun on himself.

The shooting happened at the couple’s home in the village of Mancha Blanca on the island of Lanzarote late on Wednesday night.

Ms Massey was transferred by helicopter to the Doctor Negrin Hospital on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria. Both were in intensive care yesterday and their conditions were described by a hospital spokeswoman as “serious, but not life-threatening”.

Their six-month-old son Ruben is being cared for by his father’s family.

Ms Massey’s parents, Ethel and Patrick, whose only other daughter Kathleen died two years ago, aged 26, from organ failure, flew out to Gran Canaria yesterday afternoon from Dublin. Ethel Massey said yesterday: “We got a phone call from a sister of her partner. We were told there was an accident and we thought it was a driving accident. And [during] the second phone call at 10.40am she told me it happened in the house. I said what happened in the house and she said he shot her, that he had shot Michelle and then shot himself. By now we know she has lost a kidney and that her arm bone is shattered. She had an operation this morning at eight o’clock.”

A relative at the couple’s home said: “It is a tragedy. We’re still not exactly sure what happened.”

A police source said: “He [Eulogio] has been arrested and both will be questioned when they regain consciousness.”
