Limerick gets ready to celebrate African diversity

DUTCH student Femke Van Der Kooij yesterday got into the swing of things for the upcoming Africa Day in Limerick.

Limerick gets ready to celebrate African diversity

She stepped out for a photo call at City Hall in traditional African dress.

Ms Van Der Kooij, who is a visiting student at the University of Limerick, said: “I got the dress and head wear from Nhono Tambidila from the Congo.”

Ms Tambidila, who has been living in Limerick for the past six years said: “Africa Day is an initiative of the African Union and it falls each May. It is designed to celebrate African diversity and success and to highlight the cultural and economic potential of the continent.”

Africa Day will be celebrated in Limerick on May 17 with a wide range of events in the grounds of City Hall.

Mayor John Gilligan said the celebrations will feature a number of high-profile African and Irish acts, including Congolese musician Niwel Tsumbu and the Discovery Gospel Choir.

An African bazaar will feature stands from Kenya, Lesotho, Congo, Cameroon and Ghana. Traditional dishes will be served.

The sound of African drums will also beat out over the Shannon.

Minister of State for overseas development, Peter Powers TD, said: “The programme of events is rich and colourful and the range of community groups taking part is truly impressive. I have no doubt that May 17 will be a very enjoyable and entertaining day and will allow people of all ages and nationalities to join in celebrating Africa’s rich culture and history.

“The fact that the vast majority of the performers and community groups are giving their time and energy for free is testament to the support our many African friends and neighbours enjoy in Ireland. Limerick and the mid-west have a strong and vibrant African population. “
