No bull: Overcharging customer runs amok

SHOPPERS in a Co Mayo town found themselves almost on the horns of a dilemma when a runaway bull decided to give the china shop a miss and opting instead for the local supermarket.

While every shopper likes to get the freshest meat possible, this beef proved to be too prime as it charged up and down the aisles.

The shop was packed with customers who didn’t moo-ch around when the berserk bovine barged in the door of Cummins’s SuperValu in the centre of Ballinrobe.

Miraculously, no one was hurt while the freshest steak in the store was on its bull run.

“Luckily, it wasn’t a China shop,” joked supermarket proprietor John Cummins.

The incident occurred when the bull escaped the clutches of its owner and ran into Cummins’ Super-Valu in the centre of the town.

“The bull ran down one aisle and into the store area, where he had a good look around and came back out again,” explained Mr Cummins.

“He then charged down another aisle and out the front door again. As the pictures show, there were a lot of people in the shop at the time.

“Amazingly, no one came directly in his path or it could have been very bad news.

“Some of the staff ran after him when he went into the store, but they got out of the way again when he turned around to come out — and I wouldn’t blame them.”

The only damage done was to fruit and vegetable stands. “We won’t be inviting him back in to settle his bill,” said Mr Cummins.

“People were joking afterwards that our beef was fresh and fully traceable — my view is that he was coming in to see for himself if the stories of our unbelievable value are true. They are, of course... He passed out Tesco to get to us. That tells its own story.”

The bull was later recaptured by his owners and returned to his rural dwelling place. His future shopping plans remain a mystery.
