THE rate of unemployment among women in Cork is significantly higher than the national average.

According to the March issue of the city council’s Cork Economic Monitor, unemployment among women over 25 in metropolitan Cork (Cork city, Cobh, Carrigaline and Midleton) increased by 93% (from 2,611 to 5,049) between February 2008 and February 2009, whereas the national increase was just 68% (from 53,022 to 89,071) for the same period.

Unemployment among women under 25 in the region increased a staggering 101% over the year (from 731 to 1,471). This is compared to an 87% increase nationally (from 13,943 to 26,057).
