HEALTH chiefs are attempting to stem the e90 million annual spend on energy bills in hospitals and health facilities around the country.

The costs, mainly on heating, lighting and air conditioning, have forced the Health Service Executive (HSE) to replace inefficient equipment and reduce energy use.

In spite of already-agreed, cost-cutting deals with gas and electricity suppliers and increased energy efficiency in new buildings, health chiefs are worried bills will continue to soar.
