WITH the total cost of the e-voting fiasco set to top e60 million, opposition leaders last night demanded the Government finally pull the plug on the doomed initiative.

Taxpayers, by the year end, will have forked out e3.5m just to have the 7,500 mothballed machines kept in storage. And there is no sign of them ever being used again.

Fine Gael environment spokesman Phil Hogan said: “We know these machines will never be used, but I find it incredible that, even in these economic times, ministers are refusing to accept the inevitable and cut the country’s losses.”
