Two men killed, 16 injured in multiple crash

TWO people were killed and at least 16 taken to hospital last night following a road crash in Co Kildare.

The collision between three cars, a mini-bus and a pick-up truck occurred shortly before 9pm on the N9 in Co Kildare between Kilcullen and Castledermot, close to Ballytore.

Two occupants of one car, both males — one in his 20s and one in his 50s — were killed.

Sixteen occupants of the mini-bus were taken to Naas General Hospital. their condition is not known.

At least two other people, who were travelling in the other cars, were removed to hospital.

Gardaí and emergency services from Kildare, Naas and Athy attended the scene and the injured were removed to Naas General hospital. The road is expected to stay closed this morning.

Gardaí investigating the incident have appealed to any members of the public who were in the area at the time of the accident to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527730.

Meanwhile, a man died last night in a road accident in Co Antrim.

The PSNI said he was a pedestrian who was struck by a car on the Gortahar Road in Rasharkin shortly after 7pm.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital but his injuries were not serious.
