AN OPPOSITION TD has claimed cutbacks on carers are already taking place, with incontinence sheets no longer available for all dementia patients.

Fine Gael TD Catherine Byrne warned that carers have become the target of “an all-out assault” that is “undermining the extremely valuable work they do”.

And highlighting her own “personal experience” of the situation, she said that on a recent visit to her brother — who cares for her mother who suffers from senile dementia — she was told by a district nurse that incontinence sheets were not available because they are a “fire hazard”.
