Appeal for witness to contact gardaí after fatal accident
Gardaí said Kathleen O’Sullivan died after she was hit by a lorry while crossing Main Street in Charleville, Co Cork on Thursday.
Superintendent Pat McCarthy, who is leading the investigation, said gardaí were alerted to the fatal accident by a man who was driving a black Volkswagen Passat.
Supt McCarthy said that moments after the accident happened the man drove up to gardaí, who were in a different part of the town, and informed them of what had happened.
“It is very important that we talk to this man and we are asking him to come forward as he may have witnessed exactly what happened,” Supt McCarthy said.
He added that gardaí were also looking to speak to anybody else who witnessed the fatal accident which took place shortly after 2.30pm.
Ms O’Sullivan, who was single and in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.
Her body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem was carried out yesterday by assistant state pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster.
The dead woman was from Milford and, before retiring, worked for a number of years in the local creamery.
She was originally from Drumcollogher, Co Limerick.
Gardaí have taken CCTV footage from the area and are examining it.
Main Street was only reopened at 1am yesterday.
