PRACTICAL safeguards to ensure privacy and protection for victims of crime are seriously lacking and could be acting as a deterrent for potential witnesses.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has voiced concerns over the lack of private and secure areas in the courts for victims, and the fact that identity of witnesses picking a suspect out of a lineup is not protected.

Fine Gael spokesman on justice Charlie Flanagan said the problem is stark.
