FORMER taoiseach Bertie Ahern delivered a thinly veiled rebuke to his successor — insisting the economy only went down hill after Brian Cowen took over.

In a pointed remark, Mr Ahern said the economy was doing well for the first part of the year and was in good shape when he left office in May.

“The figures for the first four months of the year were actually good. It was from June on that the real problems started. There was no great concern when I left office,” he said in a newspaper interview.
