€20m convent and care home

WORK has got under way on a €20 million convent and care home for a congregation of nuns who have been based in Waterford city for generations.

The home for the Little Sisters of the Poor is being built on Abbey Road in the Ferrybank area of Waterford, on the borders with Co Kilkenny.

Social affairs Minister Martin Cullen turned the sod on the development which will consist of the sisters’ own residential accommodation, care rooms complete with ensuite bathrooms, some self-contained apartments and an internal street area with a restaurant /library and shop, a training centre and community hall.
