OPPOSITION parties slammed the “chaotic” events of yesterday that meant they did not debate emergency legislation on banking guarantees until after ten o’clock last night.

The eventual late sitting of the Dáil followed five postponements of the debate while Government officials rushed to put the finishing touches to the legislation.

On the fifth postponement, opposition parties said the debate should take place this morning, but Taoiseach Brian Cowen, insisted it was important to hold it last night to ensure stability when markets opened.
