Doctor’s fears over bullet lodged in victim’s spine

THE 35-year-old victim of a shooting in Cork city may have to be transferred to the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dún Laoghaire amid concerns about a bullet that is lodged close to his spine.

Medical experts at Cork University Hospital are concerned that the victim, who is from Togher, may face paralysis if he does not get additional treatment.

Gardaí have not been able to interview the victim yet because he has been sedated. However, they are hoping to do so shortly.

He was shot twice by a would-be assassin at a house at Kilmore Road, Knocknaheeny, at about 9.20pm last Sunday.

The gunman fired two shots into the sittingroom of the house, hitting the 35-year-old and narrowly missing his girlfriend and her two children, aged six and three, who were also in the room at the time.

The gunman, who was wearing dark clothing and a hoodie, fled the scene in a dark green Mercedes.

The car was later found burnt out at Sheehan’s Lane, Monard.

Gardaí believe that the gunman had an accomplice and that they had a second getaway car stashed somewhere near Sheehan’s Lane.

Gardaí renewed their appeal yesterday for the driver of a navy-coloured Volkswagen Golf, that was seen at Sheehan’s Lane about 9.45pm last Sunday, to contact them. Detectives want to be able to rule the lone occupant of the car out of their inquiries.

Meanwhile, gardaí continued to search the area around Sheehan’s Lane yesterday in the hope of finding clues which may give away the identity of the gunman.

They also carried out house to house inquiries in the Monard area and around Kilmore Road.

Detectives are also examining CCTV footage taken from parts of the northside of the city.

Gardaí are anxious to speak to anybody who was in the Kilmore Road area or Monard between 9pm and 10pm, especially if they may have seen the dark green Mercedes and its occupants.

A senior Garda spokesman said they are keeping an open mind on the motive behind the shooting.

Anybody with information is asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station at 021 4946200.
