HUNDREDS of jobs are to go in west Waterford and east Cork following yesterday’s confirmation that the ailing Cappoquin Chickens plant is to close by the end of October.

Workers at the chicken processing factory were told of the “devastating blow” at a meeting yesterday evening after negotiations aimed at securing a buyer for the business finally broke down.

Calls have been made for the government to take steps to train and upskill employees of the factory to help them secure alternative jobs.
