JUSTICE Minister Dermot Ahern has announced proposals for beefed-up legal and Garda powers to combat the €100 million illegal trade in DVD piracy.

Among proposals being considered are powers for gardaí to seize vehicles involved in door-to-door sales of illegal DVDs.

Harsh penalties for land or property owners who allow pirated material to be sold on their sites are also recommended.
