Limerick takes pride in tackling homophobia

LIMERICK’S social scene has moved ahead of some professions in tackling homophobic behaviour, the city’s gay and lesbian support groups claimed yesterday.

Richard Lynch, a volunteer with Rainbow Support Services (RSS), said gay people are openly accepted in the city’s night life venues.

Mr Lynch said: “Gay people can go into any bar. We love Limerick and the amazing creative and artistic life which defines it.”

He was speaking at the launch of Limerick Gay Pride 2008 which runs for a week from next weekend.

Although Limerick has no dedicated gay bar, it is planned to open three by the end of the year.

Vanessa Buswell, full-time director of RSS, said there was still a level of homophobia among the caring and teaching professions in the city.

She said a talented and experienced teacher in Limerick she knows, is afraid to “come out” because of fears he might lose his job.

She said Rainbow Support had now compiled a list of gay friendly GPs and solicitors in the mid-west.

She said: “This is very positive.”

The theme of the Gay Pride Week is “I love Limerick”. You’re A Star winner, Leanne Moore, speaking at yesterday’s launch, said: “Limerick is a city that gets a lot of stick, for no good reason.

“Events like Pride 2008 shine a light on the city and showcases all that is positive and unique about its people. I love Limerick — it’s part of me as I am a part of it.”

The rainbow support organisation will help raise funds from a number of events which include a garden party and the Rainbow Ball.
