Family uninjured after gun fired through window

GARDAÍ in Waterford are investigating a shooting at a house in Waterford yesterday, the third of its kind in two weeks.

Family uninjured after gun fired through window

A family of two adults and eight children escaped uninjured after shots were fired through a kitchen window at the rear of a house in Crystal Court, Kilcohan Park, at about 12.10am yesterday.

Gardaí preserved the scene and a technical examination was carried out.

It is understood that the blast is connected to a dispute between Traveller families that arose during a bout of bare-knuckle boxing on July 12 in the city.

Garda resources have since been severely tested by scenes of violence and public disorder.

Garda searches three weeks ago led to the seizure of two sawn-off shotguns; 37 petrol bombs; a small quantity of ammunition and an assortment of weapons, including slash hooks, machetes, hammers, pick axe handles, swords, knives and hatchets.

It was reported that a peace deal was being brokered and the situation had seemed to have calmed down. However, the latest shooting is thought to have cast doubt on hopes of a complete cessation of violence.

Yesterday’s attack is the latest in a number of shootings and arson attacks in recent weeks. A gunshot was discharged in the Farran Park area of the city in the early hours of Tuesday last, while a similar shooting incident happened at the housing estate five days previously.

Gardaí have so far arrested 15 men in connection with the dispute, with the majority remanded in custody pending further court appearances.

Anyone with information on any of these incidents can contact gardaí in Waterford on 051-305300.
