DEMANDS for airport-type security in prisons increased last night after Ireland’s most notorious criminal was caught with a mobile phone in his cell.

Convicted drug smuggler John Gilligan was found with the phone, SIM cards as well as a syringe at the country’s maximum security jail, Portlaoise Prison.

A Garda investigation was launched yesterday into how the 56-year-old obtained the contraband.
