Sunday World pays €20k to charity over drug trial article

THE Sunday World newspaper made a €20,000 charitable contribution for being in contempt of court during the biggest drugs trial in the state’s history.

The contempt of court by the newspaper took the form of an article published shortly after the trial commenced in which it effectively stated that the men on trial had carried out the crime.

An application was made to have the jury discharged and for a retrial to be ordered with a new jury as a result of the article.
