THERE are two types of people who go to the Galway races; those who go for a flutter and those who go to flutter their eyelids.

Unfortunately for the latter making the annual pilgrimage to Ballybrit for the fashion stakes rather than the betting equivalent, the typically wet Galway day meant the best attempts at dressing to impress involved designer wellies and a particularly fine waterproof jacket. Any fluttering of eyelids sent a dollop of mascara chin-ward.

Men, women and children were soon running for any shelter available as the rain came down shortly after the first race.
