Arrest likely in hammer fight

GARDAÍ in Clonmel are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to last Friday’s hammer attack on a busy shopping street.

The 32-year-old victim of the assault is said to be doing well in South Tipperary General Hospital, but no arrests have been made in relation to the incident.

Bypassers looked on in horror as a fight broke out between a number of people outside a busy shop on Clonmel’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street.

One man was struck on the head with a hammer and immediately brought to hospital. Reports yesterday suggested that he will make a full recovery.

It is understood gardaí investigating the assault are close to making an arrest but are still appealing for witnesses to contact the station in Clonmel with any information.

The attack occurred at about 4pm on Friday afternoon.

The people involved in the fight, at least three, are all from the Clonmel area and are all known to each other.
