‘Threats didn’t work’

IRISH people felt Europe was “talking down to them” when they voted against the Lisbon treaty in June, independent TD, Finian McGrath, told French President Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday.

‘Threats didn’t work’

He set out eight points on why the Irish people vote no to the Lisbon treaty. The first was that “educated, intelligent people could not read or understand it”. He said “arrogance and threats did not work”.

Mr McGrath said people had “major concerns about a loss of power” in areas such as taxation, agriculture and the fishing industry.
