Road upgrade boosts airport

THE €8 million upgrade of Waterford’s Airport Road is now open to traffic, making access to the regional airport easier for the growing number of passengers availing of its routes to Britain and continental Europe.

Work on the upgrade of the road, which links the airport at Killowen in Co Waterford to Waterford City, began early this year.

The new high-quality road connects to the Waterford city outer ring road and will eventually provide direct access to the Waterford city by-pass and the Dublin motorway when these projects are complete.

“Access to the airport on what was a small country road has been a cause of much concern to us for several years now and its replacement was regarded as a priority for some time,” said Waterford Airport boss Graham Doyle.

“Consequently, we are very pleased that the new road is now available to make access to the airport much quicker and easier.

“We pride ourselves on being the airport of choice for stress-free travel for the entire southeast region and further afield, and the new road will make the journey to the airport even more convenient for our passengers.”

The new road has been “worth the pain” caused by the construction, Mr Doyle said.

“The new road will open up new and exciting opportunities for Waterford Airport and the businesses located there and makes us much more central to the economic life of the entire region.”

Public lighting and signage are currently being installed on the road. As a result a 50kmph temporary speed limit applies.
