4,000 immigration offenders stopped by data exchange

GARDAÍ have identified almost 4,000 immigration offenders attempting to enter the state since it began an information exchange programme with Britain.

The success of the programme stemmed from the Garda National Immigration Bureau developing, in 2003, a state-of-the-art computerised registration system at a cost of more than €8.5 million.

The system allowed the bureau to begin a data exchange programme with the British authorities in November 2005.
