Strike at hospital ‘would be catastrophic’

A TRADE union official has warned of catastrophic consequences if non-nursing workers vote in favour of industrial action at Cork’s Mercy University Hospital.

Strike at hospital ‘would be catastrophic’

On Tuesday next, 170 members of SIPTU will ballot on strike action following the hospital’s decision not to renew the contracts of 30 temporary staff. The move is part of an overall plan to offset a €4.6 million shortfall at the hospital.

SIPTU official Joe O’Callaghan said his members were furious that the decision not to renew the contracts was taken without any formal talks with the union. Those affected include porters, catering staff, dieticians and lab workers.

Earlier this month, management confirmed the measure was a cost-cutting initiative and stressed the layoffs would not have an impact on patient care.

Mr O’Callaghan said the decision to ballot came amid members’ fears of the impact such a staffing reduction would have on existing posts.

A decision by SIPTU to stage industrial action at the hospital would have a catastrophic impact on patient care, Mr O’Callaghan said. The ballot would be taken at Connolly Hall.
