Compensation stand-off delays craft centre upgrade

A STAND-OFF over compensation has stalled moves to vacate a centre that is housing some of Cork’s last remaining craftsmen.

Compensation stand-off delays craft centre upgrade

City manager Joe Gavin wants the city-owned Shandon craft centre — home to six businesses — vacated by the end of the year.

Mr Gavin said compensation is available to the tenants but he did not disclose details of the package. However, it is understood the deal does not include an offer of new accommodation.

The building is in a state of extreme disrepair and needs major work, Mr Gavin said.

It is also at the heart of a proposed €16 million visitor centre for which €12 million in grant-aid is being sought.

The centre was handed over to the city a number of years ago by the IDA.

It is home to some of the city’s most experienced craft workers including musical instrument maker Martin Faherty, stained glass window company Lead Lines, jewellery makers Shandon Workshop, the Blarney Irish Crystal shop, and the Creative Ceramic Workshop.

The craftsmen, who rent their units from the council, were told over a year ago that they would have to vacate the building by last Christmas.

But councillors were told on Monday night that only one has agreed to move. It is understood that the centre’s café will close within a matter of months.

Fine Gael Cllr Patricia Gosch called on city officials to engage urgently with the remaining tenants to end uncertainty about the future of their businesses.

She said some have been unable to print stationary with their business address because they do not know where they will be located in the future.

Some of the businesses have been based in the centre since the mid-1980s.

There are up to 18 units in the centre but only six are occupied.

The surrounding Shandon area is subject to a new development plan with Fáilte Ireland aiming to provide an “iconic” new venue.
