MYSTERY surrounds a delay in rolling out private speed cameras nationwide, a measure road safety chiefs are insisting will save lives.

Government no closer to securing speed camera deal

Despite correspondence sent to the Minister for Transport about delays in putting speed cameras on roads, the Taoiseach and three government departments yesterday could not say when negotiations might wrap up on the much-needed safety measure.

The plan is for about 600 cameras to be rolled out nationwide. Cameras will be placed mainly in traffic blackspots where drivers will be advised by signs that they are entering a monitored zone.
