Mum fights for her life in Jersey

A LIMERICK mother was last night fighting for her life after a house fire in Jersey which claimed the life of her daughter.

Daphne Quinn, 34, originally from Whitethorn Drive, Caherdavin, was trapped in the house with Lilly May, 3, when the fire broke out at around 4am on Wednesday. Lilly May died on Wednesday night and Daphne is critical. Ms Quinn has been living in Jersey for the past eight years and works with a government department.

Her parents, Tom and Mary Quinn have flown out to Jersey with their sons, Barry, John and Thomas and daughter, Stephanie.

The fire is thought to have started in an airing cupboard of the terraced house on Mont Cochon in St Helier. Ms Quinn was found unconscious while a man who tried to rescue them was treated for smoke inhalation.

Lilly May died after she was transferred to a specialist burns unit Southampton.

Neighbour Cidalia Gomaes said she woke up at about 4am to hear a man saying: “There is fire in the house, can someone please help us.”

Daphne’s mother was a mid-wife in the regional maternity hospital before she retired. Her husband worked in Shannon.
