Hundreds attend removal of stabbed teen

Ukraine-born Roman Vysochan, 16, of Ashley Close, Westbury, died near his home on Saturday night.

A man aged 19, was still being questioned last night at Henry Street Garda Station.

One youth aged 16, arrested on Sunday has been released and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

It is understood Roman went to shield a friend who was set upon by a man carrying a knife.

Mourners last night were led by his parents Vitally and Tetyana and his brother, Oleg.

Students from St Munchin’s College which he attended and members of the under-16 Corbally United soccer team escorted the coffin as it was brought from McMahon’s funeral home to St Nicholas’s Church in Westbury.

The Vysochan family settled in Limerick some years ago.

It is believed that a friend of the murdered youth had earlier on Saturday broke off a teenage romance and a man connected to the girl went to the Corbally area with a second person and confronted the youth who had broken off the romance.

As he lunged at this person with a knife, Roman is understood to have tried to save his friend and was mortally stabbed in the chest.

The intended victim received a stab wound to the leg.

All four people at the scene were known to one another.

Declan Cunningham who coached Roman at Corbally United said: “Soccer was his whole life and he was brilliant. You’d always see his bike tied to the railing at the pitch even when there were no fixtures. He was mad to practise and he scored all the goals for us.

“He was very polite and his character was perfect,” he said.
