Anger at EU plan for pig remains in feed

EU PLANS to allow pig remains to be used to feed poultry could save farmers millions of euro, but are causing fury among animal rights campaigners and some religious denominations, it emerged yesterday.

Seventy million chickens are produced in Ireland annually, but the price of cereal feed has soared.

The use of animal protein in animal feeds was banned in Europe after the BSE (mad cow disease) crisis more than a decade ago.
