Garda accountability the ‘most progressive’ in world

THE Garda Ombudsman Commission is one of the most progressive police monitoring systems in the world and soon to be copied by other western democracies.

That’s according to Garda ombudsman commissioner Conor Brady, who told a conference yesterday that Ireland’s recently introduced system for watching the gardaí was matched only by those of Northern Ireland and England and Wales.

“This model of police oversight doesn’t actually exist anywhere else outside of these islands,” he said at the third annual policing conference organised by Waterford Institute of Technology.
