A DONEGAL newspaper is standing by a report which said a serving garda sergeant praised the actions of Mayo farmer Padraig Nally when he killed a man who was breaking into his yard.

The Donegal Democrat said at an Irish Farmers’ Association public meeting on Tuesday night Sgt Paul Wallace described Mr Nally as having done “everyone a service” in the way he defended his property.

In 2004 John ‘Frog’ Ward, 42, was shot dead by Mr Nally at his farm in Cross, Co Mayo — the farmer was subsequently found not guilty of his manslaughter.
